Pepper's Newsletter April 2, 2019

Pepper's Newsletter April 2, 2019

Good morning!  We like to start the newsletter off with an interesting factoid or some informative tidbit because, well, it's kinda fun! And this week is no different. So here are a few Canadian historical facts related to today's date:

  • April 2, 1868 - Victoria chosen as capital of the united colony of British Columbia, under Governor Frederick Seymour.
  • April 2, 1957 - 22-year-old Elvis Presley plays two concerts before 23,000 people at Maple Leaf Gardens; his second concert, before 15,000 fans, was the largest audience he had faced to date; warmup acts included an Irish tenor, a tap dancer and a comedian who imitated a woman taking off a girdle.
  • April 2, 1975 - High rigger Paul Mitchell secures the final piece of antenna, topping off the CN Tower at 555.35 metres in height, becoming the world's tallest free-standing structure (until 2010); the giant communications mast cost $44 million, uses 145,000 tonnes of concrete and steel.

Now on with the rest of the newsletter...

If you're a fan of quiche but avoid it because you'd rather not eat the pastry crust then Burnbrae Farms Egg Bakes Crustless Quiche could be just the thing! Pepper's carries two varieties: Cheddar, Mushroom & Bacon as well as 4 Cheese & Ham. 90 seconds in the microwave and bam, you've got yourself some ready to eat quiche. Plus, they're high in protein and low in calories. Real eggs. Real easy.

Chicken has less cholesterol and less saturated fat than beef. And that means it's better for your cardiovascular system. So if you're going to eat meat why not try something new for a change? Rossdown Farms (Abbotsford, BC) has new Chicken Pepperoni Sticks in Classic as well as Spicy varieties. Like all Rossdown poultry, these are free of antibiotics, but you also won't find any gluten or MSG either. Fully cooked and made with natural ingredients, just open the package and enjoy!

There's also Rossdown Farms Smoked Chicken Sausage available in Classic and Spicy varieties both of which are also ready to eat!

Cheese would make a nice companion food to the aforementioned Rossdown Farms products, don't you think? And many of you have been asking about a popular cheddar that suddenly and inexplicably became unavailable for awhile: Balderson 2 Yr Aged Cheddar 750g. Guess what? It's back! And not only that, but we have also added Balderson 4 Yr Aged Cheddar 500g for those of you who really like a nip to your cheddar!

Pepper's has carried Silk Organic Fortified Soy Beverage refrigerated in our dairy section forever. But now we are pleased to have just added Silk Organic Fortified Soy Beverage Original and Unsweetened in a shelf-stable, 946 ml tetra carton! It's the same great, organic soymilk, but now you can keep a few in the pantry and one in the fridge to save space! Also great for camping or storing in your earthquake kit. Just make sure to consume within 7-10 days after opening.

Ever notice that non-dairy milks are kind of like wine? You can make wine out of pretty much anything, right? Same goes for non-dairy beverages: soy, almond, pea, hemp, rice...the list goes on. So somebody figured out that you can make milk from oats. And guess what? It's become super popular for it's creamier texture and nutritional benefits. So we decided to bring in Earth's Own Unsweetened Vanilla Oat Milk, in addition to the Unsweetened Original Oat Milk that we keep selling out of. Growing oats uses 7x less water than it does to grow almond milk or cow's milk and it's grown by Canadian farmers!

Hot chocolate (in the movies they always say hot cocoa, instead? Why is that?) is one of life's simple pleasures. Sometimes people put mini marshmallows on top for an extra special treat. Others top it off with whipped cream. So good! But what if we told you there's a hybrid product that will take your hot chocolate (or pie, cake, berries, waffles, milkshake...) to the next level? Gay Lea Toasted Marshmallow Real Whipped Cream is just that: delicious, rich, real whipped cream with the flavour of toasted marshmallow! Make sure to buy two cans: one for desserts and one for emptying directly into your mouth.

Now that we're talking about sweet things, have you ever had a frollini? It's a delicious Italian shortbread cookie (that is often dipped in tea, coffee and, yes, hot chocolate!) and it's now available at Pepper's. Schar Gluten-Free Frollini is made with real honey and is adorned with a sunrise emblem. They're certified gluten-free, lactose-free and are baked with a taste that will whisk you away to the Italian coutryside.

And if you're on a gluten-free diet, but not on an actual calorie-reduced diet, then Schar Gluten-Free Chocolix is sure to elicit a Pavlovian response when you see these chocolate and caramel cookie bars. It's basically like eating a Twix bar but sans gluten!

And as long as we're talking about delicious, chocolatey cookies, we'd better mention two more additions to the Leclerc European Collection lineup. Introducing Celebration Chocolate Truffle Cookies and Celebration Hazelnut Delight Cookies. Perfect for after dinner dessert, afternoon tea or just about anytime, these premium cookies will impress everybody!

That's everything new at Pepper's for another week. As usual, the latest ad is attached for your convenience. And for new subscribers and shoppers, our ad always runs from Tuesday until we close the following Monday.

All the best,
