Pepper's Newsletter March 13, 2018

Good morning! Remember how last week we noted that March came in like a lamb? Weather wise, it's true. But in terms of new products, it's definitely been like a lion. More like an entire pride, actually. We didn't want to overwhelm you today with a whole slew of them so this week we're sending one out today, as usual, and another one tomorrow because we just don't want you to have to wait a whole other week to find out about these exciting, new products! So let's get right down to business...

Cheese makes a delicious, convenient and healthy snack. And this week in our ad we have new Arla Snack Cheese in Havarti and Gouda varieties for a terrific price of 2/$6.00!

Some time ago we brought in Califia Farms Almond Milk and it's been very popular. And now we are happy to announce that we have Califia Farms Better Half Coffee Creamers! Made with almond milk and coconut cream, it's a delicious, creamy, rich and satisfying addition to your morning cup!

  • Soy-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, carrageenan-free, non-GMO, kosher, vegan
  • Only 20 calories per serving
  • A great-tasting and satisfying vegan equivalent to dairy half and half

Ask anyone what one of their favourite foods is and there's a great chance that pizza is near the top of that list. But everyone knows that it's not always a healthy choice. Until now, that is! Caulipower Pizza has a cauliflower-based crust and is available in three cheese, veggie or classic margherita! They're gluten-free and have half the sugar of other gluten-free pizzas! So Trust the Crust and make pizza your new favourite vegetable!

Our Full Service Meat Department is pleased to now include Cumberland Sausage under the counter glass! This style of pork sausage originated in the ancient county of Cumberland, England and the flavour is dominated by pepper, predominantly, as well as some other spices. The meat is chopped, not minced, so it offers a courser, meatier texture than that of regular sausage and it is coiled, not linked. This is a must try!

Turmeric has grown immensely in popularity recently because of its natural antioxidant properties and because it supports the maintenance of good health. It's another of the so-called "super foods." Truly Turmeric is whole root turmeric paste (not made from the powder). Add it to soups, stews, curries, stirfrys, even smoothies! It has suble notes of ginger, orange and lime! Just don't drip it on your tie cause it probably won't come out.

Have you ever tried Dahi? Now you can when you pick up Parmalat Dahi in the dairy aisle! It's a traditional fermented milk product (curd, in fact) used extensively in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and India to name a few countries. It's very similar to yogurt but a notable difference between these two is that yogurt is prepared by fermenting milk using bacteria. The bacteria that is used to ferment milk is known as ‘yogurt cultures’. The bacteria ferment the lactose in the milk causing it to produce lactic acid, which gives yogurt is tangy and acidic taste.

Curds are another type of dairy product. Curd starter is made with dried red chillies (or their stems) in hot milk. Milk is boiled and then allowed to cool for a while. When lukewarm, dried chili peppers or their stems are added. The reason for this tradition is that dried chillies are rich in a type of lactobacilli, the bacteria that helps in fermentation of milk to form curd. The bowl is then kept undisturbed in a warm place for 5 to 10 hours. After the starter is made, or saved from previous batch of curd, milk is boiled and cooled. In a separate bowl curd is mixed with its whey, and then mixed together with the milk. It is then left to sit undisturbed for 5 to 10 hours. Once the curds are separated, they may be eaten as is, or flavoured with sugar, salt, spices and any other flavours, or it may be further processed into cottage cheese, quark and /or Indian paneer (see previous newsletter). Who knew curdled milk could be so interesting?

Quinoa Quickies are ready to cook quinoa dishes containing 100% Canadian quinoa and other ingredients and are gluten-free, vegan and are high in protein. Each pouch contains four servings and reduce your meal prep time so that you have more time for, well, anything else!

Stay tuned for another product packed newsletter tomorrow. Don't forget to check out the attached advertised specials as well!

Cheers!
