Pepper's Newsletter May 23, 2017

Good morning!

We hope that you had in incredibly fun, relaxing, safe and memorable long weekend! Mother Nature finally cooperated with us (at least here in Victoria) and brought out the sunshine and warmth and boy did it feel good. Hopefully you had a chance to escape to a local lake or beach to soak up some rays and play in the water.

Speaking of water, have you ever tried water buffalo yogurt? Pepper's has been carrying McClintocks Farm Buffalo Yogurt for quite some time and it has become a very popular seller and a favourite of many of our shoppers. And this week, you'll find it ad-priced at $4.96 for a 500g container. So why is this grass fed, award winning yogurt from Courtney, B.C. so coveted?

It's made in a traditional, small batch kettle using 100% grass fed water buffalo milk and culture. Buffalo milk is very different from cow’s milk as it is naturally homogenized, higher in calcium and protein and lower in cholesterol.  The fat molecules are much smaller making it easier to digest. The protein is different as well making it suitable for many people who have intolerances to traditional cow’s milk yogurt. The yogurt is naturally thick without any thickeners, cream or skim milk powder added and has a mild, smooth, great taste.

Pepper's is BIG on local products and currently our Produce Department has all kinds of tomatoes from Glanford Greenhouses. Tomatoes on the vine, romas, beefsteaks and cherry tomatoes in a clamshell package are all available! We also have local, conventional asparagus from Sterling Farms. And you can also find local, organic snap peas from Longview Farms of Central Saanich. These are just some of the delicious, local items that you can find in every department at Pepper's!

New this week at Pepper's is Mediterranean Gourmet Dolmadaki. This Greek specialty of selected grape leaves stuffed with the finest rice is not only simple but it's also very tasty.

It used to be that the only way you could get a burger that tasted like a Big Mac was to go to McDonalds. Well, now you can recreate that favourite flavour by purchasing not only their Big Mac sauce, but also the Filet-O-Fish and McChicken sauces right here at Pepper's! Why order take-out when you can make your very own Big Mac right in your own kitchen. Or at least a reasonable facsimile of one.

Type 1 diabedes (T1D) is a serious health concern for millions of people and can be a life-threatening disease. For more than 40 years the Junior Diabedes Reasearch Foundation has been the leader in the search for an end to T1D but they understand that the word "junior" is no longer descriptive of the disease or those burdened with it. Many adults suffer from this disease. For that reason, the organization is now recognized as simply JDRF. If you would like to make a donation in any amount (minimum $2.00) towards finding a cure for T1D, simply tell any of our cashiers and a paper sneaker representative of the Telus Walk for a Cure (June 11, 2017 for Greater Victoria) will be posted in the store. Let's see how many sneakers we can hang up!

That's all for now. We hope to see you in the aisles very soon. Have a great week!
