Pepper's Newsletter November 5, 2019

Good morning. You won't get another newsletter until after Remembrance Day so we'd like to take a moment here to pay our respects to the soldiers past and present, the men and women who fought, who died, who suffered and sacrificed and who are responsible for providing us with the freedoms that we so often take for granted. Lest we forget. Poppies are available at the tills for those who wish to make a donation to help support our Veterans and their families.

Ok, let's talk about some exciting new changes that our full-service Meat Dept. is making! We've added what we think are some pretty darn good items to our meat counter; things such as Breaded Pork Cutlets, Hand-Made Italian Meatballs, Cranberry-Stuffed Boneless Pork Chops, and a larger variety of Marinated Meats and Poultry, just to name a few. Certain items will be seasonal and don't expect to always see the same things all the time because we'll be rotating new items in and out. But please stop by, pick up a new item (or two) and let us know next time if you enjoyed it!

If you could pickle your own vegetables at home with one simple step, would you do it? Well, if you're the kind of person that is into pickling but sometimes feel that the process is laborious and time consuming then guess what? You've just lucked out because Pepper's now offers Island Brine Co. Ltd Brines, the pre-made pickling brine made right here in Victoria! Available in Savoury Garlic & Dill, Classic Island Brine and Spicy Caesar Blend, one simply opens the jar, adds whatever vegetables that thay want to pickle and, well, that's it. There are no more steps. Wait, could it actually be that simple? The answer is YES! Put green beans, onions, cucumbers, cauliflower, celery or whatever you like in the jar and let them pickle! Too easy!

Have you ever eaten a quince fruit? Do you even know what it is? You've probably heard of it but many of you have likely never held one in your had. That's because it's somewhat of an undercelebrated fruit, largely in part to it's lumpy shape (similar to a pear), tough and difficult-to-cut flesh, unpalatable taste (when eaten raw) and it only becomes ripe in October and November. But let's get back to that taste. Yes, you can eat a quince raw but you wouldn't want to. Very tart indeed. Cook the fruit, however, and it becomes a wonderfully fragrant and delectable delight! So when The Little Stand told us that they had local Quince Jelly available, our ears pricked up. Because we know that discerning customers will jump at the chance to get their hands on a jar of this seasonal sensation. So if you want to see how this fruit is transformed into a thing of beauty (in both sight and taste) then make sure to get a jar today!

It's time to bake and if you want to include some premium chocolate chips in your recipes but without adding sugar or artificial sweeteners, Krisda Semi-Sweet Chocolatey Chips is the way to do it! Sweetened with stevia, these also make a great addition to your home-made trail mix or as an ice cream topper. Plus, they're rich in fibre. Go figure!

If you're looking for organic Greek yogurt then look no further than our own Dairy Dept.! Oikos Organic Greek 3.25% Yogurt is available in Plain and Vanilla and is incredibly thick, rich and creamy. It tastes as good as the Oikos yogurt you're already used to except it's organic! 'Nuff said.

Edible Coast of Surry, BC has been making their harlequinned figured boxes of Gone Crackers since 2001. That's a lot of crackers made between now and then. So they figured it was time to go from crackers to kooky. Now Pepper's has Edible Coast Gone Kooky Cookies in Coconut Oat and Cafe Dream varieties! Great all by themselves, the company also recommends crumbling them over a bowl of vanilla ice cream. Oh and just in case the quality and flavour of this product wasn't enough to entice you to make a purchase, this excerpt taken from the Province of British Columbia website might: Edible Coast is a significant supporter of a number of local community organizations, including the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation, the B.C. Cancer Agency and CKNW Orphans’ Fund. The company is also a consistent supporter of the arts, helping to raise funds for the Arts Club Theatre, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Vancouver Aquarium, by donating product and gifts for their respective fundraising events.

Here's a really unique item arriving just in time for the holidays: Stonewall Kitchen Gingerbread Butter! Taken from the company website: Made with a unique combination of sweet and savory ingredients including three kinds of ginger, our Gingerbread Butter is a delicious, non-dairy pantry essential. Used as a secret ingredient in recipes or spread on muffins or pound cake, it's wonderfully light and smooth with a sweet spice taste that’s perfect for the holidays and beyond. Sounds good to us!

Coconut milk is a staple in Latin and Asian cuisine and it's also a very popular non-dairy beverage. And now you can purchase Wild Tusker Organic Coconut Milk Powder as the perfect clean, plant-based tropical alternative to dairy creamers! You can substitute it for wet coconut milk, too! It comes in a convenient, resealable bag which goes into the fridge once opened. Use only what you need and save the rest!

One more thing that we've very excited to mention, just before we sign off...Pepper's is getting its own app, available for iOS and Android and it should be up and running by December! We'll keep you posted as to when it launches so stay tuned for that! It's going to be awesome!

That's all for another week. Until next time, take good care!
